World biggest black truffle producer

Aragón

Aragon accounts for almost 50% of the world's truffle production. It has some 10,000 hectares dedicated to the planting of these underground fungi and there are almost 800 associated truffle growers, nine mycorrhizal plant nurseries, 16 truffle processing companies and six irrigation companies.

Teruel is at the head, especially the region of Gúdar-Javalambre with the town of Sarrión, where an international fair is held, at the head.

Every year the fields of this little village of Aragon produces 30.000 kg of black truffles, nearly as much as France as a whole. Most of the dug-up truffles ends up traded at France markets as truffe du perigord.

World's leading market

Mora de Rubielos

The market at Mora de Rubielos, a cosy charming village in Teruel market has moved 67% of the total truffle that has been commercialized in the world in the last 2019-2020 campaign. The five markets in the rest of Spain have handled 14% of the world total, a figure similar to that of Norcia, in Italy. In France the volume has been 5% in its two markets, the Truffle Market of Carpentras and the Truffle Market of Richerenches

The history of the black truffle goes back several centuries.
However, until the early 1800s, fresh black truffles could only be grown in the wild.

Then, in 1815, Joseph Talon from the village of Saint-Saturnin-lès-Apt in south-eastern France had the idea of planting on a rocky plot a certain number of oak acorns, of which it is already known that they produce black truffles.
